Tonight's tearful toast

Speech in Donna and Migi's wedding reception

Tuscany, Italy

If my friends and I were in Sex and the City, Donna would be Charlotte. She IS Charlotte. There's a scene in the show where Charlotte fought with Mr. Big for hurting Carrie -- that's so Donns. In fact, we have a term in our barkada: The Great Wall of China. That's how protective we are of each other. Donna is also Charlotte because she's a hopeless romantic. She's had her wedding march song picked out since she was like, 3. When we were in college, she had a sign on her apartment's door that read: "all his steps led only to her door." Wtf, right? But it wasn't that guy. Or the one after that. Donna loves fiercely, in a consuming, can't-live-without-you type of love. But her heart breaks with equal intensity. A few years ago, she had her heart shattered and my barkada and I actually had shifts to take care of her. We took turns sleeping in her condo and bringing her food. We constantly reminded her of the line from poet e.e. cummings: "I carry your heart." Then she had a work trip to San Francisco and started talking about this guy. I was NOT happy. I couldn't share her kilig because Donns did not deserve another heartbreak from what we assumed would be a rebound relationship. Great Wall of China, remember? And yet, here we are. We carry both of your hearts now. Migi, thank you for marrying all of us. We love you in the fierce, consuming, can't-live-without-you love way too. It turns out that all of Migi's steps led only to her door, all the way to Tuscany, down the aisle earlier today, and now, they're going to walk together, step by step, for the rest of their lives.
